I don't think this is the worst idea ever, but it would need a lot of work. Everything would need to super fast. I picture certain things taking a whole heck of a lot more time than with how files are handled in Windows presently.
Really, what I would like to see, is no directory structure at all when dealing with documents (or the structure hidden from the user at least). I would like to see a search feature that is so good and so fast that actually having directories on your computer for your documents would be slower than just search for what you need (even if you didn't know the file name etc).
They are just starting to get there... (Windows Vista will have instant searches, but most people will still probablly keep their files organized because the search will not be good enough)

The problem is the lack of display on the "piles". Put a file inside a pile on accident and don't know where it is and now its a pain in the ass. It's no different than folders imo.

From a customer support standpoint this is going to suck a lot of ass.
Its hard enough describing verbally how to right click, now you'll have to verbally describe how to twist your pen around, or encircle.
Magnify this difficulty about 100X for teh old people. God forbid you try to explain piles to them. Its bad enough most of those people grew up when desks were created, and just finally got used to folders and icons. Now you have piles. Wheeee.
And of course, I can just see the fun caused by the word "lasso". You'll have country bumpkins who call in going OH YEA I WANNA LASSO THAT PILE WOOO, you'll have the ameritard jackasses who will insist that you call it "encircle" not "lassoo" as lassoo sounds french.
